Calgary flutist Sarah Gieck is quickly becoming one of the most sought after performers and teachers in the province of Alberta. She is a regular guest musician with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and has appeared with the Red Deer Symphony, Altius Brass Ensemble, Alberta Winds, Ensemble Resonance, Alberta Ballet, Land’s End Chamber Ensemble and Museaus String Quartet. Sarah is also the former principal flute of the Lethbridge Symphony, a position she held for three years. In addition Sarah has been a guest musician with the Fort McLeod International Music Festival for the past three years, performing alongside internationally recognized musicians in a series of chamber music concerts throughout southern Alberta. In the upcoming year Sarah will be featured as a concerto soloist with the University of Lethbridge Wind Orchestra and will give a solo recital as part of the University Faculty Artist Series.

Sarah is well known for her teaching and has had many successful students in recent years. She has held the position of flute instructor at the University of Lethbridge since the fall of 2009 and continues to teach all undergraduate flutists. Her students consistently win top prizes at the Lethbridge Kiwanis Festival, most recently including the Rose Bowl, a prize awarded to the top player of the festival. Her students are also successful on a national level in both the Canadian Music Competition and the National Music Festival Competitions. In addition to her studio in Lethbridge Sarah maintains a private studio in Calgary where she works with students of all ages and levels. Within Calgary, Sarah's students consistently win classes in the Calgary Kiwanis Festival, prepare for RCM exams, recitals and have fun doing it! Sarah has been a member of the MusiCamp Alberta summer faculty for three years where she has the opportunity to work with students from across the province, sharing her experience and knowledge of the flute.

As an adjudicator Sarah has been invited to the Crowsnest Pass Music Festival, Cardston Music Festival and Drumheller Music Festival. She has experience adjudicating winds, brass and full ensembles.

Sarah holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Calgary where she studied with Gwen Klassen, a Master of Music Degree from the Royal Northern College of Music located in Manchester, England, and an Artists Diploma Degree from the University of Cincinnati. Sarah has worked closely with many of the world’s leading flute teachers including Lorna McGhee, William Bennett, Dr. Bradley Garner and Peter Lloyd. In the summer of 2009 Sarah was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada where she worked with Camille Churchfield and enjoyed taking part in the orchestra's first ever live web-cast performance.

As a student Sarah was very successful in many competitions. Most notably she won the woodwind class at the National Music Festival in 2004 representing the province of Alberta, an achievement which has not been repeated since. Her winning performance was featured on CBC radio later that year. Sarah has also been a prizewinner at the Canadian Music Competition National Finals and the Central Ohio Flute Association Competition. Aside from playing the flute Sarah enjoys spending with her husband and her three special cats!

Hailed by the Calgary Herald as having "beauty of tone and a wonderfully flexible phrasing", Sara Hahn is currently the Principal Flutist for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. From her humble start in band class at the age of twelve, Sara has gone on to study with Canadian flutists Jan Kocman of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and Susan Hoeppner who is an internationally renown performing/recording solo flutist. Sara is a co-founder of the flute and harp duo, The ArtStrong Ensemble, a Canadian ensemble that has performed collaborative productions with various visual and musical artists throughout Canada.

Prior to accepting her post with the Calgary Philharmonic in 2006, Sara has performed professionally in the position of Assistant Principal Flute/Piccolo with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. In 2002 she completed an extensive three week tour of Japan and Hong Kong with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.

Sara has also performed as a soloist throughout Canada, the United States and most recently Brazil as a guest of the Campos do Jordao International Winter Festival. She has a long list of awards and trophies for her solo flute performances, including the University of Toronto concerto competition (resulting in a solo performance with the UTSO), first place in the National Finals of the Canadian Music Competitions (19&under) and the Junior Musical Club Concerto Competition in Winnipeg - which gave her a debut performance as a soloist in front of an orchestra at the age of 17. Sara was also recently awarded first prize of $10,000 as the winner of the Womenʼs Musical Club of Winnipeg Doris McLellan Competition for Solo Performance with Orchestra.

In addition to her performance career, Sara has been quite active as a flute teacher and coach across Canada for over a decade. Her enthusiastic approach to sharing musical ideas and techniques have ensured that several of her private students have been accepted into both Undergraduate and Graduate degrees at the University of Manitoba, University of Calgary, and McGill. Saraʼs goal as a teacher has always been to provide encouragement, new techniques and ideas to help each student reach their potential, whether that is to become a professional musician, do well in exams/competitions, or simply improve the quality of playing while maintaining a fun and relaxed environment.

Sara has graduated with honours from the University of Toronto receiving a Bachelor in Music Performance degree.
